Hamilton, NJ -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/05/2017 -- The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ) recognizes that people of any age or identity can develop a disordered relationship with gambling, whether in the form of casino gambling in Atlantic City or online gambling at home. Through community outreach and education, the CCGNJ seeks to spread awareness of the signs of gambling addiction so that at-risk gamblers and their loved ones can spot the signs before issues arise.

Seniors are the fastest-growing demographic of gamblers in the country. People over the age of 65 possess some unique risk factors for gambling addiction: Retirees may seek gambling as an outlet for social interaction, an escape from boredom, and as an emotional distraction from loss. Some even report that gambling distracts them from chronic pain.

"There is no age limit on addiction," said Neva Pryor, Executive Director of the CCGNJ. "For loved ones of elderly people that are displaying signs of gambling addiction, the message must be one of support, not of shame."

Seniors struggling with gambling addiction often display some warning signs, such as neglecting hygiene or dropping other hobbies they once enjoyed. A problem gambler may ask for loans with increasing or unusual frequency, or might be ignoring utility bills that are past due. The most important thing a loved one can do in such an instance is to show they they care and are available to talk or accompany them in finding gambling problem help.

The CCGNJ provides numerous resources for support, treatment and hope to help disordered gamblers and their loved ones. For confidential, 24/7 support, call their hotline, 1-800-GAMBLER, or visit them online at https://800gambler.org/.
